Default Official Premiership and European Football Thread 09/10
Fixture list has just being published

Quote:
Manchester United will begin the defence of their Premier League title at home to newly promoted Birmingham.

Carlo Ancelotti's first game in charge at Chelsea will be against Hull at Stamford Bridge as the campaign gets under way on the weekend of August 15.

Liverpool open at Tottenham while Arsenal face Everton at Goodison Park.

Wolves play West Ham at Molineux and Burnley visit Stoke on their return to the top flight before facing Manchester United at Turf Moor 18 August.

Big-spending Manchester City make the journey to Blackburn on the opening day before hosting Everton at Eastlands on 19 August.

New Wigan boss Roberto Martinez starts his reign at Aston Villa, while Bolton are at home to Steve Bruce's Sunderland and Portsmouth meet Fulham at Fratton Park.

Manchester United have to wait until the end of the month before they play one of the top four clubs as they take on Arsenal at Old Trafford on 29 August, with the return fixture at the Emirates on 30 January.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side visit Anfield to play Liverpool on 24 October and last season's runners-up are at Old Trafford on 20 March. Chelsea are the last of the other top four sides to face United when they play the champions at Stamford Bridge on 7 November, with the return fixture on 3 April.

Last season's losing Champions League finalists close the season at home to Stoke on 9 May, while Liverpool finish their season at Hull on 9 May.

Liverpool visit Stamford Bridge on October 3, while Chelsea travel to Anfield on 1 May.

Wolves fans will be looking forward to a December 15 trip to Old Trafford to play Manchester United and a home fixture against the champions on March 6, while fellow top-flight newcomers Birmingham play the champions at St Andrews on 9 January

The continuing UEFA/FIFA campaign to supress the premiership contines today: Chelsea have been banned from signing any players until 2011......that is f****** ridiculous.......and this coming just after a quiet, mild-mannered player who has barely put a foot wrong in the game (Eduardo) is banned for doing something that countless players do every week in the champs league........

Of course Real Madrid never tap-up players do they.....................?!?!?!?!?!

Nice to see Ferguson agrees with Wenger Re:Eduardo -

"I agree with Arsene, I would ask the same question 'is it going to happen to everyone?'

"You become insular and protective of your own player and own team, we're all selfish that way.

"I would have been saying 'what about all the rest of the players?'.

"But I wouldn't have been pleased if my player had done that.

"I wouldn't say it publicly though, because when you do that you're in danger of losing the morale of the dressing room.

"Privately, as I've done many times, you have a different view, but I wouldn't do it publicly."

(From BBC news)

If Ronaldo so much as tries a dive in the champs league then the press should eat him alive......and if they dont then hopefully they will have to make the trip to the emirates in the later stages of the competition and the arsenal fans will take care of him *wink wink*....lol

check out this article

it seems getting all those stars to la liga is havin the opposite effect.

I watched Racing Santander vs Barcelona on tuesday, Barcelona had 73% of the posession all game, they looked too comfortable and frankly, just bored. There was some point they had almost 100 passes...away from home against decent la liga opposition.

Its becoming a glorified scottish league with only two big boys with the rest way behind.

On the other hand, premiership surprisingly seems to have gotten more interesting, more goals, and teams like man city and tottenham becoming more of a threat to the traditional big 4.

who would have thought...

Arsenal making good money

taken from the official website

Quote:
• Group turnover increased to £313.3 million (2008 - £223.0 million) reflecting income generated from cup competitions and property sales.
• Match day revenue was increased to £100.1 million (2008 - £94.6 million), mainly as a result of progress to the UEFA Champions League and FA Cup semi-finals.
• Operating profits (before depreciation and player trading) in the football business were £62.7 million (2008 - £59.6 million).
• The completion of sale of 208 (2007 – Nil) private apartments at Highbury Square contributed £88.0 million of revenue (2008 - £15.2 million) and boosted the operating profit from property activities to £7.8 million (2008 – Nil).
• Profit after tax of £35.2 million (2008 - £25.7 million) was a record for the Group.
• Since the end of the financial year there have been a number of further positive developments in relation to the Group’s Highbury Square project:
• Of the 655 private apartments in the development, sales have now completed on 445 units with a cumulative sales revenue value of £172.4 million.
• The balance on the bank loan used to fund the project has been substantially reduced to £47 million and agreement has been reached to refinance the loan and extend its term to December 2010.

Commenting on the results for the year, Peter Hill-Wood, non-executive Chairman, said:

“The Group’s profits have now risen in each of the three years in which Emirates Stadium has been our home. This is excellent news although I should perhaps stress that making and reporting profits is not in itself the primary objective for the directors. First and foremost we are supporters of this great football club and, as such, our main goal will always be the achievement of success for Arsenal on the field. The Group’s profitability is important because it is a by-product of running the Club as a solvent and successful business, which in turn allows us to maximise the level of investment in the playing staff and in the future development of the Club.”

Ivan Gazidis, Chief Executive, said:

“Clearly, the Club already has a first class stadium, an excellent world-wide reputation and outstanding core support. Football is a hugely competitive and fast moving business and we must ensure that Arsenal is not just keeping pace but setting the pace, both on and off the field. The Club is superbly positioned for the future and I am tremendously excited about the opportunities we have ahead of us.”
